Advertise on Your License Plate

Will it help our state?blank california license plate

A San Francisco based company recently introduced the idea of a Smart Plate – an electronic license plate that would advertise to surrounding car. Theoretically, a car with the Smart Plate, when stopped for more than 4 seconds, the license plate would flash an ad. What kind of ad, you ask? Therein lies the controversy.

The sponsor for this new project says the ads would be things like, save the whales or keep an eye out for a recently abducted child. This, however, remains to be seen. Others are understandably concerned about more distractions on our roads – just another way in which technology is harming us.

At the root of this new idea, the state of California seems to be leveraging it as a way to get the state out of debt, drivers acting as the conduit.

That’s the by-line from NIXLE, a new Internet based notification tool that community residents can use to receive information from their local police department about what’s going on in the neighborhood.

Here’s a recent message the residents of Woodland Hills California received:

Advisory Message has been issued by the LAPD - Topanga.
Wednesday June 9, 2010 6:38 PM PDT
Woodland Hills burglary suspects arrested
Two burglary suspects were arrested in Woodland Hills shortly after
breaking into a house.  A diligent neighbor saw the two suspects
entering the home in the 21000 block of Avenue San Luis and called 911.
The police helicopter spotted the suspects' car as they were fleeing the
scene and directed officers to a shopping center on Ventura Boulevard,
where the suspects were arrested.  Due to the quick thinking of the
neighbor in calling 911, the suspects did not get away with any
property; police found that they had dropped the property they were
intending to steal inside the house as they fled.
For full details, go to https://local.nixle.com/alert/2468055/.

Nixle is free to subscribe too, and can be customized to filter the kind of information you want to receive.  Although the idea is new, and local law enforcement’s participation varies by area, it appears to be a idea who’s time has come…
